Jade

Jade is a green semi-precious silicate mineral that is a long-time favorite of Far Eastern countries when it comes to jewelry and ornaments. Jade comes from two unique types of crystals – nephrite and jadeite. Surprisingly, the best jade crystals have a somewhat greasy smooth surface. Another determination of jade quality is a high-pitched ring when tapped with metal or stone.

Jade Meaning:

Not many know why Jade is called by its name, but it is of Spanish origin. The phrase “Piedra de ijada” means “stone of the colic”. In the olden times, babies with colic will be laid on their backs and the green gemstone will be placed on their stomachs. As time goes on, only the word ijada remained and eventually got transformed to jade (pronounced /Ja-yd/).

Jade Trivia:

The finest jade is the almost transparent, vibrant emerald-green color called “imperial jade”. Jade also comes in translucent white color with bright green coloration like veins, patches or spots. White jade is called "moss-in-the-snow” jade. Yellow jade stones are called “apple jade” on account of their intense yellowish green color. There is another very valuable jade, this time in lavender or deep plum hues called “lilac jade”. Less common jade colors include red, orange, brown, gray and black.
